When did Christmas become about money?

Welcome back to my third blog on blogger. I am excited to switch up the topic, as instead of talking about a brand I will be talking about Christmas. The question I ask myself is when did Christmas become all about money? Most people when they think about Christmas, they think about the festive season where everyone gets together with family, and it is a wholesome time of the year. However, for the marketing side of things Christmas has been made to be all about money. Brands and shops cannot wait for the Christmas period because yes, it is chaotic, but it is also when they get the most amount of money. This is when companies use the marketing technique of creating Christmas advertisements. These range from adverts about sales, gift giving, and discounts all made to entice the people watching to spend money for Christmas.
In the lead up to Christmas the panic buying and gift giving leads to a surge in spending everywhere, that is where the ads come into play by striking the thoughts into buyers' heads that they must buy presents for Christmas especially at their stores. Furthermore, businesses take this opportunity to market their products in their adverts as the “perfect gifts” just in time for Christmas. Most websites also will have sections named “gifts for her” and “gifts for him” which specifically makes it easier for customers to find gifts for people and therefore spend more money. The Christmas commercials created by companies gain insane amounts of attention. These businesses make sure to include the idea of gift giving which is not the true meaning of Christmas.
One famous Christmas commercial is one created by Sainsburys which was aired in 2014 and reached an insane amount of people. This advert was called "1914" 1914 | Sainsbury's Ad | Christmas 20141
as it was made in a partnership with The Royal British Legion. It was inspired by real events taking place exactly 100 years before 2014 which was 1914. Overall, the advert was a huge success, their advert on YouTube has 23 million views. This clearly shows the impact Christmas has on the success of businesses and the ads are more than just advertisements. (Reader's Digest, 2022) the-10-best-christmas-adverts-of-all-time
It was said that “The Christmas truce is an emotive and cherished story in our history that is especially poignant in this first world war centenary year. That is why we have worked together closely with the Legion to ensure we bring this moment to life with authenticity and respect.” (The Guardian, 2022) sainsburys-christmas-advert-recreates-first-world-war-truce

Really enjoyed the switch up, and i loved seeing your take on how Christmas has become a marketing technique for businesses to sell their products in a 'festive' way. I believe the marketing scheme takes away from what the holiday is really about. It was a pleasure to read ! cannot wait for your next post.
ReplyDeleteThis blog was such a great read and really true, the true meaning behind Christmas has been stripped and Christmas has become about money and big organisations making as much money as possible although I do love seeing different Christmas adverts this time of year.
ReplyDeleteThis blog was very interesting and true because Every year Christmas is slowly becoming more & more about money
ReplyDeleteGreat blog! I like how you brought an example of a famous ad especially one with a deeper meaning as its partnership was with the Royal British Legion. It also does feel as money and greed is taking over the Christmas holiday.
